Classroom Math Games - Junior Prep Maths Treasure Trail

All the boys from Grade 0 to Grade 3 participated enthusiastically in the classroom math games and the Junior School Maths Trail. classroom math games

The trail followed an organised route around the school environment. The specific areas of mathematics that we highlighted were counting, measuring, capacity, time, direction, problem solving, construction and a few puzzles and teasers were thrown in along the route.

The trail was pre-planned by the Junior Prep teachers, who designed the trail booklets. The trail booklets compiled in 2006/7 were fine-tuned and after much discussion and planning the new improved 2008 trail was ready to run.

The trail capitalised on the boys' natural urge to explore and discover mathematical links.

At each stopping point a challenge was set which had to be completed before moving on to the next station. At all the stations the boys were actively involved in questions and discussions and they were encouraged to explore, investigate, record information and data, to estimate and measure and solve problems together.

Our aim was to have boys discover that mathematics could be applied to real life situations, making Primary School Maths meaningful, enjoyable and interesting. I think we managed to achieve all these goals successfully.

Congratulations to all the boys who took part!

I should like to take this opportunity to thank all the Junior Prep mothers who helped with the trail and the Junior Prep teachers for their hard work and support.
