New Computer Lab at WHPS
by Sashin Pillay
This term we have been privileged to use the new computer lab. We came back from the holidays and were surprised to see the new computer centre by the Library. We were so thrilled to see the new black computers with the new headphones. We immediately started using the computers in our English period. We have been using the English programme “Readers Are Leaders”.
When you log onto the programme you are asked for your “username” and “password”. You are then logged onto your own profile, and you are put onto your grade’s level.
In the programme you can play hangman, do comprehension exercises, memory challenges, grammar testing and tests on your reading strength and speed. Hangman is the fun part of the programme with the funny sound effects and challenging words. In the comprehension exercises, you read a story, and then you are asked questions on the subject. On the memory test you are required to put the sentences from the story in the correct order. In the “Reading Speed” test you are given flashing words, which then you need to type again. When we are asked to read a passage, it times you to see how fast you read, so this will influence the time that each word flashes.
Once you have completed the work, it gives you a mark for each section so you are able to see your strengths and weaknesses. This is an excellent way of improving your English skills. The lessons are a whole lot of fun and very informative.
I am looking forward for the Maths and Afrikaans lessons on the new computers as well!
