Recycling Day at WHPS

As part of the ECO-ED programme at WHPS, the whole School had a Recycling Day Awareness Programme on Wednesday 30 September 2009. Each class was involved in learning about the importance of recycling.

Recycling is the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials. Recycling is a key concept of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.

"Recyclable materials" may come from home, business or industry. They include glass, paper, metal, textiles and plastics. These materials are brought to a collection centre or picked-up from the curbside; and sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new products bound for manufacturing.

The boys were all actively involved in art and craft activities relating to the Recycling theme. Songs were sung to highlight the importance of not littering. Each class has a bin especially for papers that can be recycled and these bins are emptied by the boys each week into the big orange recycle bin. Brigitte Theunissen Head – Senior Prep

"Just as we cannot blame others for destroying the environment, so we cannot look to others to protect the environment. Responsibility for both begins at home."

Paul Griss, The Daily Planet
