WHPS Grade 5 Camp to Mountain Sanctuary ParkJohann Henrick Pestalozzi emphasized the use of direct, firsthand experiences. In addition to reading, writing, and maths he taught practical skills such as farming, housekeeping, spinning and weaving. His methodology was based on the belief that the child would use these beginning experiences at a later time to formulate principles and generalizations on his own. At WHPS we believe that it is a vital part of a holistic education to lead the children out into nature, teach them on the hilltops and in the valleys. ![]() There they will listen better, and the sense of freedom will give them more strength to overcome difficulties. But in these hours of freedom, we let them be taught by nature rather than by a teacher. ![]() WHPS believes that the child should experience the actual object of study before reading about it. The use of the senses - seeing, hearing, tasting, and touching - are the avenues through which children will come into contact with the natural world. In preparation for the later study of natural sciences, children should first gain acquaintance with objects such as water, earth, fire, rain, plants, and rocks.
![]() Once again an enjoyable camp was experienced by the Grade 5 boys. Their outstanding behavior and enthusiasm help to ensure a wonderful camp. ![]() Brigitte Theunissen - HOD Senior Prep Riette Kleefstra - Grade 5 Teacher Return from WHPS Grade 5 Camp to Home Page |
