Character Education at WHPS

Character Education at WHPS

Character education is a learning process that enables boys and adults in our school community to understand, care about and act on core ethical values. These values include; respect, justice, citizenship, and responsibility for self and others.

Character education at WHPS teaches the habits of thought and deed that help people live and work together as families, friends, neighbours, communities, and nations.

Our boys spend much of their young lives in classrooms.  As a result this time in school is an opportunity to explain and reinforce the core values upon which character is formed.

Character education must be approached comprehensively to include the emotional, intellectual, and moral qualities of a person or group. It must offer multiple opportunities for boys to learn about, discuss and enact positive social behaviours. Leadership opportunities and involvement are essential for character building to become a part of their beliefs and actions.

To successfully implement character education, WHPS is committed to:
  • Take a leadership role to bring the staff, parents and boys together to identify and define the elements of character we want to emphasise.
  • Provide training for staff on how to integrate character education into the life and culture of WHPS.
  • Form a vital partnership with parents and the community so that boys hear a consistent message about character traits essential for success in school and life; and
  • Provide opportunities for all stakeholders to model exemplary character traits.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
